MERRIMON UNITED METHODIST CHURCH LIBRARY POLICIES

March 20, 2006

PURPOSE:
The purpose of this document is to help our congregation understand why certain materials are added to the library's collection and others are not. It also serves as the guide for library staff for collection development and maintenance.

MISSION STATEMENT:
The library of the Merrimon UMC shall strive to provide Christian books necessary to meet the informational and recreational reading needs of the congregation. Bible study aids, local church history, Methodist church history, church history in general, and Christian fiction shall be made available for use by the congregation.

LIBRARY COMMITTEE:
The Library Committee shall be made up of volunteers who are committed to administering the policies set forth in this document, being available to maintain the library during designated hours and generally to promote use of the library.

RESPONSIBILITY FOR SELECTION:
The ultimate responsibility for selection of material for the library shall be God's. The Library Committee shall be responsible for preview of materials. Recommended books shall be previewed by at least two committee members. If controversy may be a problem, more than two members shall preview the questionable material, and a decision shall be reached after discussion by the entire committee.  The Pastor of Merrimon UMC shall also be consulted before a decision shall be made.

ACQUISITION OF BOOKS:
New and good-condition used books will make up the inventory. Any books donated shall become the possession of the library and shall be used or disposed of at the discretion of the committee.

At the present time there is no line item in the budget for library materials and supplies. The committee shall submit a Library budget to be considered when the Charge Conference meets to set the church budget for 2007. Until such time as money is available in the budget, congregants may donate books (new or used) or may donate money for the purchase of materials and supplies. Checks should be written to Merrimon UMC and designated for "Library Use".
